Take STEPS - Sustainable Transport,
Energy and Planning Solutions
This website
provides space to several community groups and ideas:
CAST - Cairns Action for Sustainable
Transport
A group of people, formed in 2008, is concerned about the present
over-reliance on car transport and the governments lack of foresight of
impending peak oil and climate change. We see that Cairns is uniquely
positioned to have a sustainable and effective rail transport system by
using existing rail infrastructure combined with (electric) shuttle
buses.
EmPower
A group of people which formed in 2006 to raise awareness for Climate
Change and that the Cairns region is ideally suited to implement and
showcase solutions to the biggest problem facing humanity organised
several events including a large exhibition showing available solutions.
Kuranda Range Road Defenders
The trucking lobby has pushed for widening of the scenic
Kuranda Range road since the nineties. Since the costs were not
justifiable by their fuel savings, a plan was created to turn Myola, a
picturesque part of Kuranda into the next Cairns suburb. the extra
thousands of residents would need a four-lane-highway to Cairns, which
was duly planned for.
Many locals did not want to loose one of the most scenic drives in the
world and mounted a successful challenge which ended in the state
government abandoning their plans.
